With the power of technology, it is possible to get involved in a number of different side jobs that wouldn’t have been possible only a few years ago. In the past, it typically only made sense to devote yourself to one type of work, due to economies of scale and barriers to entry. In today’s world, you could work as a construction foreman and moonlight as a part-time accountant or writer online. Regardless of what type of career path and what type of side job you want, it will take some effort on your part to make things work. Not everyone can pull it off, but it can be very rewarding when you do.
If you are going to try to work a regular job and then do a side job as well, you have to be willing to set some boundaries. Otherwise, your side job will start to bleed into your regular job. Your regular job will start to take over your side gig as well. When you want to be able to do these jobs successfully, you have to set some rules for how you will conduct yourself. For example, you may decide that you won’t take any phone calls for your side job while you are on the clock at your primary career. Once you have some boundaries in place, it will be that much easier for you to run both jobs more smoothly.
Create a Schedule
Besides setting boundaries for what you will do and what you won’t do, you also need to make a schedule for yourself. Create a schedule that shows exactly what hours you will be working in what capacity. For example, you’ll work 8-5 on Monday through Friday on your regular job, then work from 7-9 on your side job or on the weekends. Regardless of which options you choose, it is important to try to stick to some kind of schedule. Otherwise, you’ll end up doing both of your jobs inefficiently.
Get the Proper Education
If you truly want to be successful in your career and in your side job, you need to get the right education. If you don’t have the right type of education, it could be difficult for you to break into a side gig. For example, no one will want to hire you to do bookkeeping unless you have some kind of background in accounting.
You could check out some of the colleges in Miami, FL to see exactly what programs are available for you. Many colleges are now offering courses online, which makes it easier for you to get the classes that you need. You won’t have to sacrifice your job or your family just to go back to school.
Getting a real side job can be financially rewarding, and it can lead to a better future career for you. Just make sure that you don’t cut off your main source of income too soon.
