Prevent These Debilitating Work Injuries at Your Desk Before They Happen
Sitting at the office desk all day long can prove to be hazardous for your health. Right from back pain to sleep problem to eyestrain – all of these conditions are commonly found in people who work in stressful environments.
The reason for this is that the number of physically demanding jobs have dropped drastically in the past few decades. In other words, jobs that required physical exertion have been cut in half, indirectly increasing desk-work-related health problems. #1: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome isn’t your typical pain/soreness resulting from high amounts of typing. No, it’s much more than that. It’s the numbness, tingling, and sometimes a sharp pain that is usually caused when the nerve running through the forearm is compressed by bones in the wrist and other swollen ligaments.
Prevention: Releasing the tension in your wrist is sometimes as easy as stretching and doing other wrist exercises. Also, your wrists are not supposed to rest on the wrist pads below your keyboard/mousepad. The right way to do it is to have your hands hover over the “wrist rest”, which should only be used for resting between typing.
#2: Lower Back Pain
Sitting for long hours at stretch with a bad posture can harm your body and it can prove to be a serious problem in the long run if you don’t move regularly. Back pain is one of the most common causes behind people missing work. But bad posture when sitting at the desk is not limited to slouching. Even sitting up straight but keep your back curved can also cause lower back pain.
Prevention: The first step to preventing this problem is to get aware of your posture when sitting at the desk. Also, you should try to get regular exercise, which includes exercises that help you strengthen your abdominal muscles, indirectly relieving some of the pressure on your lower back. #3: Stressful Situations
No matter how physical your regular activities are, stress can prove to be a big problem at workplace. But still, for all those people that have to do some physically challenging work at least are involved in activities that ease their stress. But if you’re stuck to a desk, you are more likely to develop stress related problems.
Prevention: Smaller stress outbursts can be taken care of by practicing breathing and relaxing exercises at your desk or at home. And if meditation isn’t your cup of tea, you better do something about it because it can seriously help you bring down your stress levels.
Getting the most out of your job shouldn’t come at the expense of your health. If you work the regular job hours chained to your desk, then you should be careful or else you may develop health problems in the long run.
